Starlink vs NBN in Perth's Northern Suburbs: Which Is Right for You in 2026?

Andrew Barnett22 February 2026

If you live in Perth's northern suburbs — anywhere from Joondalup up to Yanchep, Two Rocks or Lancelin — you've probably noticed the internet options aren't exactly equal across the board. Some streets have full fibre NBN. Others are stuck on fixed wireless. And a growing number of people are looking at Starlink as a genuine alternative.

So which one actually makes more sense for your home? Here's a straight-up comparison based on what we're seeing on the ground in 2026.

The Quick Numbers

NBN plans in Perth typically range from $60 to $100 per month depending on your speed tier. If you're on fibre (FTTP or FTTC), you'll get solid speeds — NBN 100 will usually deliver around 90-96 Mbps in the evenings.

Starlink's residential plan starts at $69/month for 100 Mbps, goes up to $99 for 200 Mbps, or $139 for uncapped speeds. There's also a one-off hardware cost of around $549 for the dish and router — though you can sometimes pick up refurbished kit for $299.

On paper, NBN fibre wins on price. But the key word there is fibre.

The Problem with Fixed Wireless in the Northern Corridor

Here's what a lot of people up north don't realise until they move in: many of the newer estates in Alkimos, Shorehaven, Amberton, Eglinton and Yanchep are on NBN Fixed Wireless, not fibre. And fixed wireless can be a very different experience.

During peak hours — when everyone's streaming after dinner — fixed wireless speeds can drop significantly. We hear from customers all the time who are paying for NBN 50 but getting 15-20 Mbps in the evenings. If you've got a family of four all trying to stream, do homework and jump on a video call at the same time, that's painful.

This is exactly where Starlink becomes a serious option.

Where Starlink Wins

Availability.Starlink works everywhere. Doesn't matter if you're in a brand new estate that hasn't been connected yet, a rural block in Gingin, or a coastal property in Two Rocks. If you can see the sky, you can get Starlink.

Consistent speeds.Starlink's low-earth orbit satellites deliver 50-200+ Mbps with latency around 25-50ms. That's good enough for Netflix, Zoom, gaming — the lot.

No contracts. Month to month. If NBN fibre finally arrives at your address, you can switch without penalty.

Quick setup. We can usually have a Starlink dish professionally mounted on your roof within a day of getting the kit. No waiting weeks for an NBN technician.

Where NBN Fibre Still Wins

If you've got fibre to the premises (FTTP), it's hard to beat. Lower latency, more consistent speeds during peak, and cheaper per month. If you're a serious online gamer or you work from home doing large file transfers, fibre is still the gold standard.

The catch is you need to actually have fibre available at your address. For many people in Perth's northern growth corridor, that's not the case yet.

The Hybrid Approach

Some of our customers run both — a basic NBN plan for everyday use and Starlink as a backup for when NBN drops out (which fixed wireless does, especially in storms). Others have ditched NBN entirely and gone all-in on Starlink, especially in areas where fixed wireless has been unreliable.

What We Recommend

Check your address on the NBN website first. If you've got fibre — stick with it. If you're on fixed wireless and frustrated with evening speeds, Starlink is worth a serious look.

We install Starlink dishes across all of Perth's northern suburbs — from Joondalup and Clarkson through to Butler, Alkimos, Yanchep and Two Rocks. Professional roof mount, cables run neatly, and we'll make sure you've got a clear line of sight for maximum performance.
